If you’re like me and never really knew the difference between a medical massage and a Swedish massage, don’t worry—you’re definitely not alone. I used to think a massage was just a massage… until I sat down with Eddie, our Lead Massage Therapist here at Better U. He gave me the rundown, and now I see why not all massages are created equal.
While we don’t offer Swedish massage at Better U Family Chiropractic, we think it’s important to understand the difference—especially if you’re wondering what kind of massage your body actually needs.
Medical Massage: Targeted and Therapeutic
This is the type of massage we specialize in at Better U. Medical massage is designed to treat specific issues like chronic pain, injury recovery, postural imbalances, or limited mobility. It’s part of a more clinical approach and often works hand-in-hand with chiropractic care or a doctor’s treatment plan.
Here’s what makes medical massage different:
It’s focused on problem areas—not just general relaxation.
It may use techniques like deep tissue, trigger point therapy, and myofascial release.
It’s designed to improve mobility, reduce pain, and support the body’s natural healing.
It can be a little more intense than your typical spa massage, but it’s incredibly effective if you're dealing with discomfort or trying to bounce back from an injury.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is all about relaxation. It helps reduce stress, calm the body, and improve general well-being. It’s typically found in spas and while it feels amazing, it’s not meant to treat medical conditions or injuries. Swedish Massage uses lighter techniques like:
effleurage (gliding strokes)
petrissage (gentle kneading)
That’s why here at Better U, we stick with what we do best—therapeutic, purpose-driven massage that helps you move better, feel better, and recover better.
Which One’s Right for You?
If you’re just looking to relax, a Swedish massage at a spa might be great. But if you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, or want to actively work on your posture, medical massage is the way to go—and that’s exactly what we offer here at Better U.
Still not sure what your body needs? Stop in and talk to one of our licensed massage therapists—we’ll guide you every step of the way.
