Do U even stretch, bro?
What's going on fam! Simple question, simple task, but for real, do U? Stretching might seem basic, but it can seriously make a huge difference for your body and overall health. Today, we’ve got our Stretch and Flexibility Coaches — Kenny and Mikee — dropping some knowledge on why stretching daily is a game-changer.
I’m not going to lie — I stretch all the time now. Before basketball, before workouts, even when at work after sitting for a while, U need to stretch. My main goal was to be able to touch my toes, something I thought was so easy but it’s actually something a lot of people can’t do! Once I made stretching a daily thing, it became a habit. Now, if I skip it even once, I just feel off.
Hopefully, this motivates you to start your own stretch routine. Let’s get into it!
What is Stretching?
Stretching is a physical exercise that places the body in specific positions designed to lengthen and elongate targeted muscles or muscle groups. As we stretch, blood flow to these muscles increase, delivering more oxygen and nutrients while helping remove waste products. This process not only supports muscle health but also speeds up recovery.
The Benefits of Stretching
Here’s a list of stretching benefits, compiled by our Better U providers:
Increases flexibility and range of motion
Decreases the risk of injury
Improves muscle imbalances
Enhances blood flow to muscles
Boosts oxygen delivery and nutrient absorption
Improves posture
Supports mental clarity and focus
Promotes heart health
Enhances overall muscle functionality
What to Know Before Starting a Stretching Routine
Start Small
When beginning a new stretch routine, it’s important to start slowly to avoid injury. Understand your limitations and never push past the point of discomfort into pain.
Know Which Type of Stretch to Perform—and When
There are two primary types of stretching, and knowing when to use each can maximize your results:
Dynamic Stretching: Performed through movement, dynamic stretches help warm up and loosen muscles before physical activity. Choose dynamic stretches that target the muscle groups you’ll be using during your workout.
Static Stretching: This involves holding a stretch in a fixed position for a period of time. Static stretches should be performed after your workout or as a standalone practice during the day to maintain flexibility and support recovery.
Warm Up First
Always warm up your muscles before stretching to reduce the risk of injury. Light cardio activities such as brisk walking or a gentle jog can help prepare your muscles.
Rules of Stretching
Avoid pain: Stretching should never be painful. If you feel pain, stop immediately.
Embrace the pull: A gentle pulling sensation is normal—especially when starting out—but it should never cross into sharp pain.
Stretch slowly: Move into stretches gradually and steadily to protect your muscles.
Control your breathing: Breathe deeply and consistently; avoid holding your breath during stretches.
No bouncing: Keep movements smooth and controlled. Bouncing can cause strain and lead to injury.
Hold each stretch: Aim to hold each stretch for about 30 seconds to maximize benefits.
Be consistent: Stretching for just 5 minutes a day can lead to noticeable improvements over time!
